Period 6 - Global Biology Invasive Species Project -
Invasive species are non-native organisms that harm the habitats they invade economically, environmentally and/or ecologically. As part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) unit, global biology students must work in groups of 3 to complete a wiki page on a chosen invasive species of Pennsylvania. Each student will be responsible for completion of one of the required project components. The group will also receive a grade based on their ability to work together and the quality of the final project.
Required Components:
1. Introduction - Find a photo of the invasive species and use "Blabberize.com" to construct a speaking image that includes the common name, scientific name, characteristics, and habitat of the organism. Link the completed "Blabber" to the correct period's species page. Add some descriptive text and a captured image of the "Blabber" introducing the link. 2. Location - Research the origin and current range of the invasive species. Use "Google Earth" to capture images representing both the origin and migration to the current locations. Add a label, descriptive text and a photo to each site. Use the “Tour” function within Google Earth to organize the captured images into a presentation representing the migration of the species from its origin to current locations. Link the image to the correct period's species page. Add some descriptive text and a captured image of the "Google Earth" image introducing the link. 3. Invasive Qualities - Obtain or create images that clearly represent why the invasive species is economically, environmentally and/or ecologically harmful. Import the images into "Animoto.com" to create a music video/ musical collage of the pest-like nature of the organism. Link the "Animoto" product to the correct period's species page. Add some descriptive text and a captured image of the "Animoto" product introducing the link. Be sure to properly reference any images obtained from other sources at the bottom of the species page. 4. Control - Research all methods of regulating, treating, or removing the invasive species. Use "Inspiration" to import a copy of the IPM pyramid and creatively but clearly link each the methods to their proper category within the pyramid. Insert the "Inspiration" image into the correct period's species page. Add some descriptive text explaining the image. Be sure to properly reference any images obtained from other sources at the bottom of the species page. (ControlRubric.xls)
5. References - At the bottom of the wiki page, insert a line across the page and organize the references form each of the above requirements into a list under the line. Be sure to include the web address for internet images and information and the title, volume, and publisher information for books and magazines.
